Technology Tools that create student engagement

As a teacher, its our job to support and create student engagement with our students. Learning needs be joyful, fun and also playful. I think that as a high school teacher the word “play” is a feared word. If I leave my classroom door open and my students are being loud and laughing, the fear is:

1) my students are doing nothing meaningful in the classroom.

2) my students aren’t learning and it’s an easy meaningless class.

3) students should be working quietly if they are actually learning.

For myself, I don’t have this fear. My classes are loud and the door is wide open.  I leave it open for others to get curious about my room. The invitation is always there for my other colleagues and my administration to come right in and see what we are doing and learning in my classroom.

La Cucuracha mini BYOD/T project : Spanish 10

Standard

My Spanish 10 classes were introduced to the song: La Cucaracha.
After having being taught and explained the words and phrases of the song: they were given a mini project to re-create the song with their zest and creativity.

In groups of 4-6 students were to create a music video to the words of the cucuracha song. They were also encouraged to use props, do a dance, or play an instrument to add creativity.

While practicing the Spanish language, the students demonstrated what new vocabulary they have learned!

The students used their own devices (I Pad’s, cell phones) to record their own video for this mini project.

La Cucaracha
Traditional Latin American Lyrics and Music
New English Verses by Daria A. Marmaluk-Hajioannou
What’s a… what’s a… what’s a cucaracha ?
It’s a … It’s a … cockroach
What’s a… what’s a… what’s a cucaracha ?
It’s a … It’s a … cockroach

La cucaracha, La cucaracha, ya no puede caminar
Porque le falte, porque no tiene
Dinero para gastar

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
I saw him just the other day
I like him best when, he takes his things and
He gets his friends and moves away!

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
He likes to play up with the band
Upon the guiro, he is a hero
He’s got the fastest moving hands

La cucaracha, La cucaracha, ya no puede caminar
Porque le falte, porque no tiene
Dinero para gastar

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
He likes to play up with the band
Upon the guiro, he is a hero
He’s got the fastest moving hands

The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
I saw him just the other day
I like him best when, he takes his things and
He gets his friends and moves away – ole!
